Schoharie, NY artist Elizabeth Apgar-Smith began thinking about exploring and painting the river paths from her home village in the northern Catskills to the Clement Gallery in Troy, where she began mounting solo exhibits not long after the Schoharie River made a path through her home and gallery in the summer of 2011.

The coming show of Elizabeth’s paintings shows how diverse the riverscape is as it passes from the Catskill Mountains, winding north until it empties into the Mohawk River at a spot known as the Schoharie Crossing, marked by ruins of the old Schoharie aqueduct near Ft. Hunter.

From there, at Lock 12 of the NY State Canal System, the Mohawk makes its way east through ten more locks. As the Mohawk nears the Hudson, it drops precipitously at the Cohoes Falls, necessitating a flight of several close-together locks that take boats gently down a canal that accommodates the steep descent, as it flows into the Hudson River at Waterford, NY. Once into the Hudson, boats must either turn north or pass through Federal Lock One, south to the City of Troy.

This artistic journey fittingly ends at the shore of the Hudson River in downtown Troy, a mere block from the Clement Art Gallery at Monument Square.

We look forward to seeing you on September 27th at Clement Art, 201 Broadway in historic downtown Troy for the opening of Elizabeth Apgar-Smith: "Studio to Gallery - a River Journey".
